Neralu, roughly translated in Kannada means “shade”. More specifically, it refers to the structures constructed in the middle of a paddy field to provide respite to farm workers on a sunny day. "A cool haven amidst arid lands" is also exactly what Anirudh Venkatesh, the owner of Neralu, aspires for his orchard to be like for our city dogs.
Neralu Organic Orchards was born as one of Anirudh's father's passion projects who bought the land on the outskirts of Kanakpura Road around 1992 when it was all but barren. It took a good twenty years to turn it into the rich and fertile orchard we see today. The philosophy followed at Neralu is quite simple- nature knows best, and all one should do is nurture an environment where nature can take its course. This philosophy is best showcased in the lack of pesticides and fertilizers used on the farm (even of the organic kind).

As the farm grew, Anirudh soon realised that with its 500+ species of fruiting trees, Neralu attracted a wide variety of biodiversity and fauna. And just like for his canine companion, Thomas, the wild critters, the medley of smells and textures, and the acres of land to run on at Neralu would be the perfect place for Bangalore’s city dogs to come, decompress, and simply be dogs. And thus, began the inception of Neralu as a Dog Park in Bangalore.

Dog Park Review

The 14-acre farm nestles around a hill with a cosy entrance to the lake at the foot of the hill. The exclusive package ensures access to the entire farm and lake for humans and dogs, excluding small brackets where farm work might occur. It is easily accessible by road and it is ideal to bring your car as finding cabs back to the city might be difficult. Neralu can accommodate parking for up to 10-14 cars in and around their premise.
Currently, there are three slots you can book at the dog park, each with its perks. The morning 6 am slot is ideal for the early risers and bird watching, the afternoon slot is ideal if you want to enjoy a little picnic and lounge around a little, while the evening slot offers you the most incredible view of the sun setting across the lake. There are about two to three seating areas around the farm, however, we recommend setting up near the entrance to the lake so you can switch between taking dips in the lake and enjoying your picnic baskets or playing fetch with your dog in the lush green grass.

Neralu does not offer any food or beverage services today, so remember to pack food and water for both you and your dog. It is also advisable to wear comfortable, walking shoes and full-length track pants to avoid any pesky mosquito bites and carry an extra set of clothes and towels to dry yourself and your dogs if you plan on enjoying some water time. With great perks, come great responsibilities, so ensure that you do not litter on the premises and clean up if your dog poops in any of the sitting areas or main pathways.

Sturdy barbed wire fencing is maintained all around the farm ensuring that wild animals such as wild boards, snakes, and scorpions keep their distance. However, visitors are strongly urged to keep their dogs on long leashes and under supervision throughout the visit. This measure also ensures the safety of the livestock such as the cattle, wild rabbits, cats, etc. that reside on the farm.

Don't forget to carry your swimming trunks so that you can take a dip in the lake with your dog.

Expert Opinion

Our expert panel visited the Dog Park along with their dogs. Here is the synopsis of what they had to say -
1. Neralu is indeed a very scenic place. What adds to the beauty of the dog park is the lake that can be easily accessed by our dogs for a fun swim session.

2. The USP of this dog park is that it can be exclusively booked for you and your dogs. Which means dogs can be left off-leash to explore and run around amidst nature, somthing that is missing from the life of our apartment dogs.

3. In addition, Anirudh (owner and host) is very knowledgeable and gives everyone an extensive tour of the place.

4. Considering it's an outdoor space, it's highly advisable that you apply anti-tick/flea treatment for your dog. Ensure that your dog stays within your sight as there is staff working in the orchards and we wouldn't want to cause an inconvenience to them.

5. Make sure to carry your own and your dog's food and water.

6. There are a couple of cows at the property and you must ensure that your dog doesn't go and bother them.

7. Access to places such as Neralu comes with it's responsibilities. Do ensure to clean up after yourself and don't leave any trash lying around.

The USP about the Neralu dog park is that it can be exclusively booked for your guests and dogs and you can have the whole place for yourself!
