With the onset of summer and the subsequent rise in temperatures, you are rightly concerned about keeping your dog cool and comfortable. Just like humans, dogs are susceptible to the effects of intense heat, and it's important to make dietary adjustments to help them stay cool and hydrated during the warmer months.
As the mercury climbs, the risk of heat-related illnesses such as Heatstroke becomes more pronounced, underscoring the importance of taking proactive precautions and making appropriate dietary adjustments.

Five Cooling Foods for Dogs to Beat The Summer Heat!

Here are some refreshing and hydrating foods that are easily accessible and can help your pup beat the heat:
  • Watermelon: Watermelon is a summer staple that's not only delicious but also incredibly hydrating for dogs. Packed with water and essential vitamins, watermelon makes for a refreshing treat on a hot day. Remove the seeds and rind before offering small, bite-sized pieces to your dog as a cool snack.

  • Coconut water:Coconut water is a natural source of electrolytes, making it an excellent choice for keeping your dog hydrated during the summer heat. Offer your dog plain, unsweetened tender coconut water as a refreshing drink or freeze it in ice cube trays for a cooling treat.

  • Curd or Buttermilk: Plain, unsweetened curd is not only a probiotic powerhouse but also a cooling treat for dogs. Serve it to your dog as an occasional snack or mix it with plain water or fruit for added flavour. Frozen treats can also be made by freezing curd in silicone moulds for a refreshing summer indulgence.

  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds are hydrophilic, meaning they can absorb large amounts of water and help retain moisture. Adding pre-soaked chia seeds to your dog's meals or offering them as a snack can contribute to their overall hydration, which is crucial during hot weather.

  • Fresh herbs: Certain herbs such as mint, coriander or parsley have cooling properties and can be added to your dog's meals or treats for added flavour and freshness. Chop fresh herbs finely and mix them into your homemade recipes.

While these ingredients can be a beneficial addition to your dog's diet, it's essential to introduce them gradually and in moderation, especially if your dog is not accustomed to consuming them. Start with small amounts and monitor your dog for any adverse reactions.

Three Dietary Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer!

Here are some additional recommendations to keep your dog healthy and comfortable this summer:
  • Feed refreshing treats: Help your pooch beat the summer heat with homemade frozen treats. Blend plain yoghurt with fruits like bananas or berries and freeze them in ice cube trays or silicone moulds for a refreshing snack. You can also create frozen fruit popsicles by filling ice cube trays with diluted chicken or beef broth and adding small pieces of fruit for added flavour.

  • Add nutrient-rich ingredients: During the summer months, it's essential to provide your dog with a well-balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Incorporate lean meats such as chicken, turkey, or white fish into their meals to ensure they receive adequate protein and essential nutrients. Additionally, consider adding vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and peas for added fibre and vitamins.

  • Avoid heat-inducing foods: Certain foods like ginger or pepper can increase your dog's body temperature and contribute to heat-related discomfort. Avoid feeding your dog foods that are high in fat or spice, as these can lead to gastrointestinal upset or digestive issues. Additionally, steer clear of processed meats, fatty snacks, and sugary treats, as they can contribute to obesity and other health concerns.

By offering plenty of fresh water and incorporating these cooling & hydrating foods, you can help your dog stay cool, hydrated, and happy all summer long. With a little extra care and some tasty treats, you and your pup can beat the heat together while enjoying the best of what summer has to offer.

Happy Summers!!
