What Is a Dog License?

A dog license is issued by local governing bodies such as Municipal Corporations for people who own dogs. While it helps the authorities keep track of the pet population in their area, it serves as an important validation of ownership of their dogs for pet parents.

Why Should You Register Your Dog?

According to section 191 (A) of the BMC Act, pet registration is a legal requirement in Mumbai. Pet registration helps the authorities keep track of the pet population and ensure that pets are vaccinated against rabies and leptospirosis, which is a requirement for registration. Additionally, it helps in identifying lost pets, and it is mandatory for any pet that is travelling outside Mumbai.

How to Get Your Dog License Online in Mumbai?

The pet registration process for Mumbai has been simplified, thanks to the online portal created by the MCGM. The process is as straightforward as filling out the application form with basic details of the pet and the pet parents on their portal, uploading the required documents, and completing the payment. Here are the detailed steps to help you go about receiving your dog license in Mumbai.  
1.  Visit the MCGM website at https://portal.mcgm.gov.in/irj/portal/anonymous. You will find the button to apply for a “License- Dog” under the “For Citizens” tab.

2. You will be directed to the online, application form where you will be required to fill in basic details about your dog as well as your address details including your MCGM ward (Check out this article to figure out what ward you belong to).

3. The next step is to upload the following mandatory documents: Your address proof (Aadhaar card), and your dog’s latest Rabies and Leptospirosis vaccination certificates (PDF or JPG format and up to 2 MB files permitted only). The certificate must be issued by a registered vet and must carry their signature and stamp.

4. Once you are done uploading, cross-check if all the details are accurate and submit the form. Remember to make a note of the 9-digit reference number for future correspondence.

5. Keep an eye on the mailbox as well as the spam folder of your registered email address for the acknowledgement email. It may take up to seven days to be approved.

6. Upon receiving the approval email, you can log into the MCGM website again, head over to the “For Citizens” and click on “Online Payment”.

7. Users have the option of paying through UPI, internet banking, NEFT, or credit or debit cards.

8. Once the payment is completed, you should get the PDF document of the dog license along with the payment receipt on your registered email address!

How Do You Renew Your Dog License Online in Mumbai?

Every dog license approved by BMC is valid only till the 31st of March of the following year. This means that annual renewal of the same at a nominal amount of 100 Rupees is essential. The renewal process for dog licenses in Mumbai is quicker than the first application process since most of your basic details are already registered with them. Here are the steps you can take to renew your dog license online:
1.  Visit the MCGM website at https://portal.mcgm.gov.in/irj/portal/anonymous. You will find the button to apply for a “License- Dog” under the “For Citizens” tab.
 

2.  Click on the “Renewal of Dog License” button and fill in your license number, year of registration, and ward. After submission, you will primarily be asked for updated details and documents pertaining to your dog’s vaccination records.
 

3.  Once you click on "Upload" and then submit the form, an acknowledgement will be sent to your registered email address. Once your information is verified, the payment link will be sent to your email.
 

4.  Complete the payment of 100 rupees through UPI, online banking, or through debit or credit cards. Once your payment is complete, the renewed dog license should be sent to your registered email address.
