Homemade Dog Food recipes: Chicken and Rice for Dogs

Prepping time: 5 - 10 minutes
Cooking time: 35 - 40 minutes

Total time: 50 minutes
 
Ingredients:
All of the weights mentioned below are raw weights of the ingredients.
  • 250 gm Boneless, skinless chicken breasts, diced
  • 20 gm Chicken liver
  • 60 gm Brown Rice or Little Millet (Samai Rice)
  • 80 gm Pumpkin (disco/green)
  • 30 gm Bell peppers (any color), diced, seedless
  • 15 gm Peas
  • 2 Tsp Fresh mint leaves, chopped
  • 2 Tsp coconut oil or ghee
  • 1/8th Tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ Tsp Eggshell powder
  • 1/4th Tsp ground flaxseeds (optional)
  • 5 cups water

Total Estimated Calories: ~685 calories

Portion Sizes: Suitable for a full day's meal of a 10 kg dog. Adjust portions according to your dog’s weight.
Instructions:
1) Prepare all of your ingredients: wash and dice the chicken breast, bell peppers, and pumpkin into bite-sized pieces. Roughly chop the fresh mint leaves.

2) In a large pot, heat the coconut oil or ghee over medium heat. Add the diced chicken and chicken liver. Cook until the chicken is browned and the liver is fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.

3) Add the diced bell peppers, pumpkin, peas, flaxseed powder and turmeric powder to the pot. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, until the vegetables start to soften.

4) Add the brown rice/little millet to the pot and stir to combine with the meat and vegetables. Pour in 5 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the rice/millet is fully cooked and the water is absorbed.

5) Add the chopped mint leaves, eggshell powder and mix well to combine all the ingredients evenly. Let the mixture cool completely before serving it to your dog.

  • Coconut Oil/Ghee: This healthy fat supports skin and coat health, enhances energy levels, and has antimicrobial properties.

  • Turmeric Powder: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can help with joint health and support immune function.

Notes:
  • Adult dogs should typically be fed twice a day. Puppies and very active dogs may require more frequent meals.

  • Adjust portion sizes according to your dog's specific calorie needs, activity level, and overall health. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze in portions for longer storage.
