Is it Dog Shedding Season or Skin Issues?

First and foremost, it is important to know whether your furniture is covered with dog fur because it is shedding season for dogs in India or if your dog is suffering from a skin issue. If your dog’s coat is thinning in certain areas or if they are itchy, it is likely happening due to a skin issue, which should be checked out by your vet. During dog shedding season, your dog will be growing out the same amount of new fur as is being shed, so their coat should look normal.

What exactly are Dog Shedding Seasons?

Although inconvenient for us, dog hair shedding is an essential and natural process. It is how your dog's body gets rid of old, dead dog fur or prepares for a change in weather. The amount of shedding depends on lots of things, while some dogs will barely shed, others may shed seasonally and some, even, shed year-round. Shedding may also increase if your dog is in a situation they find particularly stressful.. Usually, dogs with short or fine coats like Poodles, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and some Indies will barely shed. Dogs with thick double coats are more likely to shed. They may shed minimally year-round, and it may increase dramatically during shedding season.

When is Shedding Season for Dogs in India?

The shedding seasons for dogs in India occur twice every year. The first dog shedding season is usually between October to December when your dog will grow a nice fluffy coat to prepare for the cool weather. The second season will be between February to April when your dog will shed this coat and keep a light coat to prepare for summer.

Tips for Managing Dog Shedding Season!

So now that we understand shedding is normal, how do we manage it? While you can’t control how much your dog sheds, you can control where and how they shed. This is done in simple ways:
Dietary Support: Make sure that your dog gets the necessary dietary skin support, especially right before and during dog shedding season. This can be done by asking your vet to recommend a skin supplement. Or by speaking to a canine nutritionist and adding healthy fats and oils into your dog's meals.

Regular Grooming: Brushing your dog daily with the appropriate tools will speed up the shedding and reduce the amount of dog fur in your home. For dogs that are shedding a lot, this may need to be done every day for optimal results. Alternatively, you can select a brush that clears out dog fur from the overcoat for daily use and use a de-shedding brush right before bathing your dog. Shedding their coat is a completely natural process for our dogs, essential for the upkeep of their coat and skin health. It is a misconception that shaving a dog down helps with controlling shedding. Even though it may be sometimes cumbersome to have all of our clothes and house covered in dog fur, it should only be managed by the aforementioned ways or by temporarily preventing access to the furniture during dog shedding season.
