A dog license is a document issued annually by local municipal bodies to pet owners. Pet registration helps them keep a track of the pet population. It also ensures that all pets in the locality are vaccinated against zoonotic diseases such as rabies which is a requirement for registration. For pet parents, registering your pets legally establishes the ownership of the dog and can be crucial in case of disputes or if your dog gets lost or stolen.
If you are a pet parent living in Chennai, it is important for you to know that pet registration is a legal requirement as per the Chennai City Municipal Act, 1919. While the General Chennai Corporation has planned to launch a door to door pet registration drive, the online pet registration process is pretty uncomplicated. How to Get Your Dog License Online in Chennai?

The online pet registration in Chennai is a simple process & the dog license issued is valid for the next one year. To apply, you have to fill up the online application form, upload relevant identity proofs & your dog’s vaccination records and wait for a house-visit. Here’s a quick overview of the process:   
1) Visit the GMCC website and click on the “Pet Animal Registration” tab. If you are a new user, you will be asked for the following details: Your name, your contact details, complete address including zone and division.

2) Once you have created your account, click on “New Pet Registration” on the left tab.
3) Fill in your pet’s basic details including name, age, breed, identification marks, etc. You will also be asked your pet’s vaccination details including their deworming and vaccination status. Please note that it is mandatory for the anti-rabies vaccination to be completed before less than 365 days of registering your pet.
4)  The next step is to upload the following documents: pet parent’s photo & address proof, pet dog’s photo and anti-rabies vaccination certificate. The files should be less than 1 mb each.
5) Once your application is submitted, your application will be verified by veterinary authorities. You can expect a house-visit within a week for general verification of the submitted details and the dog’s health. Once approved, the payment link for 50 rupees will be shared.

How Do You Renew Your Pet Registration Online in Chennai?

The dog license issued by GMCC is valid for one year. If you are renewing the registration online, you can follow the aforementioned process and pay the same nominal amount of 50 rupees for the renewal.
Pet registration is a simple and mandatory process for all pet owners in Chennai. It is important to comply with the law and register your pet to ensure their safety, health, and welfare. And thanks to GMCC’s online portal, the application process should not take you more than 5 minutes!
