Registering your pet dog with the local municipal body is not just a responsibility—it's a key part of being a proud pet parent in India. Getting your dog license isn’t just a formality; it’s legal proof of ownership, which can be a lifesaver in disputes or if your dog ever goes missing. For municipal authorities, pet registration helps monitor the pet population, ensures dogs are vaccinated against rabies and other life-threatening diseases, and maintains an accurate database of pet owners, which is crucial.
Starting in June 2024, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has made it mandatory for all pet owners to register their dogs. Failure to comply could result in a hefty fine of up to ₹2,000 per month. Fortunately, the registration process is completely online, free of charge, and can be done easily from the comfort of your home via the GNIDA MITRA app. Here’s how you can go about it!

Essential Takeaways for Pet Parents from GNIDA’s Pet Policy

GNIDA’s pet policy has been shaped by input from residents’ welfare associations (RWAs), apartment owners’ associations (AOAs), and NGOs. Here are the key points pet owners need to remember:
  • Annual Registration: All pets must be registered annually with the local municipal corporation. Failure to register by the deadline will result in fines of 2000 rupees per month.
  • Cleaning Up After Pets: Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets if they urinate or defecate in public spaces. Non-compliance can result in fines.
  • Leash Requirement: Pets dogs must be kept on a leash when outdoors. A special leash with a barcode may be issued by the municipal corporation to help identify registered pets.
  • Veterinary Health Certificate: Pet owners must carry a veterinary health certificate, especially if their pet has any diseases or health issues.
  • No Abandonment: Pets should not be left unattended in public places or outside homes. Owners must ensure their pets are supervised at all times.
  • Vaccination and Sterilization: Pets must be vaccinated regularly, and sterilization is encouraged to prevent overpopulation. Non-compliance with these health regulations can attract penalties.
  • Control of Behaviour: Owners should ensure their pets do not disturb others, such as excessive barking or aggressive behaviour. Proper socialisation and training are essential.
  • Reporting Pet Deaths: In the event of a pet's death, owners must inform the Noida authorities through the PET Registration app.
  • Use of Service Lifts: When transporting pets in buildings, owners are required to use service lifts and wait if the lift is occupied.
  • Liability for Incidents: Pet owners are fully responsible for any injuries caused by their pets, including covering medical expenses for victims of dog bites or attacks.
  • Renewal of Pet Registration: The renewal of registration can be done through the Mitra app. It will be carried out only after the Senior Health Manager of GNIDA is fully satisfied after the upload of the pet dog’s vaccination by a registered vaccination.
