Dog Games: The Towel Cake

Enrichment games are a great way to keep your dog happy and busy. Here’s an inexpensive way to provide your dog with their daily source of enrichment using just a towel!

Just like humans, our dogs also need a variety of exciting activities to spice up their daily routines. Enrichment games serve as perfect avenues to keep their minds occupied while indulging their natural behaviours, be it shredding, chewing, or sniffing.
The Towel Cake is an excellent canine enrichment game that allows your dog to put their powerful nose to work and be rewarded with treats! This game is suitable for most dogs, age or breed being no barrier at all. However, you may find that scent hound breeds such as Beagles and Indies or food-motivated breeds such as Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers may be slightly more partial towards it. If your puppy tends to swallow paper in paper or cardboard-based enrichment toys, this may be the perfect new toy for them!

Difficulty: Medium - Hard
Ingredients: Turkish towel (old or new!), your dog’s favourite bite-sized treats

How to Make & Play with Canine Enrichment Game

  1. Lay your towel flat on the ground and pleat it like a saree. With each fold, add a few treats across the length.
  2. You can also sprinkle the treats along the towel as you roll it up.
  3. Tuck the end of the towel tightly to hold it in place. Now sprinkle some treats in between the folds on top and there you go; your DIY Towel Cake is ready!

Points to Remember

As it goes with most enrichment games, it is important to make the game easy and rewarding for the dog while first introducing it to your dog. You can do this by:
  1. Start with a lot more treats that are easily accessible (and visible!) and slowly start reducing the number of treats. You can also switch between a variety of treats and kibble to keep them interested.
  2. Feel free to tuck the folds in very loosely at first to make it easier for your dog to unfold them.
  3. If your dog is pawing or simply throwing the cake around to get to the treats, the game has likely become frustrating for him. Do not hesitate to take a step back and start again while reducing the complexity of the game.
