If you thought Hide and seek was a game meant only for kids, think again! The odds are that your dog is going to enjoy playing this game just as much as we did during our childhood. Several studies have shown that our dogs can benefit from and actually enjoy activities that put their minds and noses to work. This means that, if played the right way, Hide & Seek stands to offer physical AND mental stimulation for your dog!
While your dog enjoys the thrill of having to find you, this game secretly also holds a lot of benefits for your relationship and training with your dog. Hide & seek makes finding and staying close to you a lot more rewarding for your dog, which comes quite handy in a high-distraction setting. This dog game can help reinforce crucial basic obedience commands such as Sit, Stay, Down, etc. which will be used during the game in the most exciting way for your dog.  Another essential and life-saving command that will be strengthened during this game is the Recall or your dog’s willingness to come back to you, despite any distractions or temptations in the way. Lastly, this fun, little dog game can actually be a great gateway into teaching your dog more advanced levels of detection work. One simple dog game, and so many incredible benefits…so what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

How to Play Hide & Seek with Your Dog

  • Begin this game indoors, by first getting your dog into a ‘Stay’ position. (In case, your dog is still learning the ‘Stay’ command, you can have a second person hold the dog back on a leash as you give him the cue to ‘stay’).
  • During the first few rounds, hold a treat or a toy in your hand to get your dog’s attention on you.

  • Once you have his attention, slowly walk back and hide behind a piece of furniture at a short distance.

  • Wait for a few seconds and then call him to you with only a loud & clear “Come!” or whatever your recall word may be.

  • Once he comes to you, make it a big deal and take time to celebrate his win with a lot of praise and by giving him the treats in your hand. (If you have someone holding your dog back on the leash, this is the time when they loosen the leash and let him come find you).

Voilà! Your dog has now mastered the game of Hide and seek! You can now increase the difficulty levels by increasing the distance, reducing the vocal cues you give, and hiding in places that are not easily reachable. Slowly, you can take this game outdoors in a fenced & secure area.
