Hola, pet parents!
I was thinking about how we all like to try out multiple cuisines from different countries. Be it Chinese, Italian, French or Mexican, there’s always something new we like to try out once in a while or every weekend. So, the other day my husband decided to cook Mexican food and he made this delicious Chicken Burrito Bowl. Looking at the ingredients and ease of cooking it, I decided to make my own version of the same for my dogs. Now I am no MasterChef but I am pretty sure they enjoyed eating something different for a change!

Yes, I know what you are thinking. Mexican food for dogs? That means chillies and spices which aren’t good for them. That is true if we make it the traditional way. My way is as colourful and healthier, using only dog-friendly ingredients. Let's jump right into this easy and delicious dog food recipe.

Chicken Burrito Bowl for Dogs: Full Recipe

Preparation Time: 5–10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20–25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:
250 grams of chicken breast
30 grams of mixed bell peppers (red, yellow, and green)
15 grams of boiled corn
60 grams of brown rice
250 ml of chicken broth
1 table spoon of Greek yoghurt
2 teaspoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of turmeric (optional)
1 small ripe red tomato (chopped)
1 or 2 lettuce leaves (shredded)
½ cup chopped parsley or coriander leaves

Instructions:

Preparation:
  • Slice the chicken breast into thin slices or chop it into dice, bite-sized pieces (depending on your dog’s preference).
  • Chop the bell peppers, tomato, and lettuce into small pieces.

Cooking:
  • In a frying pan, add the olive oil and fry the chicken breast slices for 6-8 minutes or till fully cooked. Remove from the pan.
  • Add the bell peppers to the same pan and fry for about 5–6 minutes or until they start to soften. Take them out of the pan.
  • Pour the chicken broth into the same pan and bring to a boil.
  • Add the rice, mix it well, and bring to a simmer. You can add a pinch of turmeric for a little colour if you want.
  • Cover and let it simmer for about 6–7 minutes or until fully cooked.

Assembly:
  • Now comes the fun part, assembling the dish!
  • Take your dog's bowl and first place a layer of the rice at the bottom.
  • Next, arrange the chicken pieces, bell peppers, boiled corn, chopped tomato and shredded lettuce on the rice.
  • Top it off with a teaspoon of Greek yoghurt and some chopped coriander/parsley.

Voila! Your dog's Chicken Burrito Bowl is ready! This is one of the simplest and most nutritious dog food recipes you can try at home. I love this recipe as it has all super healthy ingredients which are readily available and are so easy to make. You can always change it up by adding a little chopped and cooked chicken liver or dog-friendly vegetables such as carrots, anything your dog enjoys. The more colourful, the more appealing it will look (to us really, the dogs don't care!)

Health Benefits of the Ingredients

  • Chicken: It is a protein-dense meat and is great for muscle development and energy, without consuming too many calories.
  • Brown rice: It is a great source of carbohydrates, providing the energy dogs need for their daily activities. It also contains fibre that is good for digestion.
  • Bell peppers: They are rich in vitamins A, and C, and antioxidants. Bell peppers help to improve their immune system and promote good vision.
  • Corn: A good source of vitamins C and B3, fibre, and minerals like potassium and magnesium, corn also helps support digestive health and provides antioxidants.
  • Tomato: Ripe red tomatoes are high in vitamins A and C. These support vision and boost immunity.
  • Lettuce: Being a low-calorie and moisture-rich food, it makes a refreshing treat for your dog. It also contains vitamins A, C and K, and folate.
  • Coriander leaves: They are high in vitamins like A, C and K. These help in improving the immune system, and promote healthy digestion and vision.
  • Parsley: Parsley is a nutritional powerhouse containing large amounts of vitamin K, along with healthy amounts of vitamins C and A, and iron.

FAQs

1) Can I use any other meat instead of chicken? You can use duck, turkey or even beef instead of chicken, but be mindful of the cooking times and caloric values of each.

2) Can I use other vegetables instead of bell peppers or boiled corn?
Absolutely! You can use dog-friendly veggies like broccoli, zucchini, carrots, and more! Just be sure to chop them into small, digestible pieces and cook them until tender.

3) Can I serve this as a full meal?
While this recipe is packed with nutrients, it's best served as an occasional treat rather than a full meal, as it doesn't offer the balanced nutrition dogs need for everyday eating. You can complement it as an occasional snack with their regular diet for a well-rounded meal.

4) Is this chicken burrito bowl human-grade?
For sure! Just add some salt, pepper and chilli flakes and you can gorge on the same dish as well. 🙂

Crucial Points for Pet Parents to Remember

  • Gradual introduction- Gradually introduce any new ingredient to your dog, especially tomatoes, over a few days to monitor for adverse reactions.
  • Tomato safety- Use only red, ripe tomatoes; green parts (leaves, stems, unripe tomatoes) contain tomatine, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Fat sensitivity- Some dogs may be sensitive to fats, oils, and lightly fried foods. Introduce the dish slowly and consider boiling or steaming for sensitive dogs.
  • Storage- Adjust portion sizes based on your dog's calorie needs, activity level, and health. While it's best to serve this dish fresh, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.
  • Occasional treat- This is an occasional treat for special occasions and should not be treated as a regular meal, as it lacks the balance needed for daily nutrition.
  • Freshwater- Always ensure fresh drinking water is available.

And there you have it— a colourful, nutritious chicken burrito bowl for dogs that’s as easy to make as it is tasty for your dog! Packed with healthy ingredients, this dish adds some variety to your dog's everyday meals while keeping things simple and fun. Feel free to switch things up a bit with more doggy-friendly veggies or chicken liver or keep it fresh and straightforward. Just remember, this is a treat, not a daily meal. Your dog will definitely appreciate the extra love and flavour!

Happy pet parenting!
